People start yoga for heaps of different reasons: to release stress, get fit, be more flexible, lose weight, sleep better, ease back pain, improve concentration, or simply because it’s “cool”. Ten days ago, I started a 9 week Shadow Yoga course @ Yoga Moves in Balaclava and last Friday the teacher told us a very cute little story that I am burning to share…

A few years ago, Yoga Moves welcomed a grandmother (70+) who decided to take on yoga for the first time. When asked why she decided to start yoga, she answered that she wanted to be able to sit on the floor to play with her grandchildren!

How CUTE is that?! The ability to sit, kneel or squat is not a given to everyone but thanks to yoga we can train our body to respond the way we want it to. And this is a sufficient reason to start learning yoga! Yoga is for all ages, body shapes and abilities. Yoga does not discriminate. Don’t let these silly considerations be an obstacle to your practice. If you are a little apprehensive, one on one classes are always an option. I have been teaching private yoga tuitions for close to a year now and it is very rewarding to see what my “senior” clients are now capable to achieve. The ability to hold a strong asana like Adho Mukha Svanasana (downward facing dog) is not for everybody especially while working with weak and painful wrists at the start, but it happened! It was also amazing to observe how quickly their body responded to yoga. The best results are always obtained by combining physical postures, pranayama techniques and guided meditation carefully chosen for their particular needs. Feel free to call me if you would like to have chat, I’d love to advise you or answer your questions! And if you have other beyoutiful stories to share, I’d love to hear them too! :-) Why did or would you start yoga?
